This week, April 26 – May 2, 2010 is Real Nappy Week. “Nappies” is the word for cloth diapers in England and other environmentally forward countries. The Real Nappy Week celebrates the environmentally friendly and cost saving choice of using cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers.
Every day, here in the US, 75 million disposable diapers, “sposies”, go to landfills, never to decompose (at least not in the next 500 years). That is about 27 billion sposies in a year.
In honor of Real Nappy Week, Bambino Mio will conduct a sweepstakes, giving away prizes daily to lucky friends on our Facebook page and followers on our Twitter Page. You can participate daily for both Facebook and Twitter. Read more about how you can win, here.

One of the most influential Mommy Bloggers niche in Cloth Diapers, Kim Rosas from Dirty Diaper Laundry is petitioning the Ellen Show to feature the Modern Cloth Diaper on her show. The idea is called #OperationFluffy and currently there are hundreds of moms petitioning the Ellen Show across various social media platforms.
When I saw passionate cloth diapering mamas in the Bambino Mio and Regal Lager Twittering network, I immediately had to find out what this was all about (and I must admit, I do feel a little behind on this knowledge).
So according to the Blog Post written by Kim, there are three phases to #OperationFluffy. To paraphrase:
Phase 1 involves utilizing social media to send the messages to Ellen regarding the Modern Cloth diaper. This includes Twitter, blogs et. Cetera.
Phase 2 are videos of babies dancing in cloth diapers (I cannot wait for this phase).
Phase 3 Kim will make a cloth diaper with Ellen on it. It will then be mailed around the world and people will take videos or photos with it on their baby to help "Ellen Conquer the World".
I can’t help but admire such tenacity that Kim as well as other cloth diaper mamas have displayed with this campaign. Regardless of us representing Bambino Mio cloth diapers, this is going to help spread the word that Modern Cloth diapering is simple, but most of all the best option for your family for reasons involving babies health and cost savings for families. Want to know how you can help #Operation Fluffy? Visit the Dirty Diaper Laundry website to see how you can be involved in this modern diaper revolution!

Dave Milligan, Sales Development Manager at Regal Lager has been elected to the board of The Real Diaper Industry Association. Regal Lager is the exclusive distributor in the United States of the award-winning Bambino Mio cloth diapering system from England.
Milligan has been in the juvenile industry since 1989. He was a retail store manager for 15 years in Salt Lake City, before becoming national sales manager for juvenile furniture company and then a stroller company. He joined Regal Lager in 2008.
“Today’s parents are definitely concerned about their children’s future environment and want to make their contribution. And today’s modern cloth diapers have evolved tremendously compared to ‘your mother’s/grandmother’s cloth diapers’,” said Milligan. “Combine that with the positive impact on the environment and substantial financial savings for the consumer, cloth diapers will continue to grow rapidly and give retailers a nice profit as well.”
Manufacturers, retailers and diaper services are working together in the Real Diaper Industry Association to continue this momentum and make cloth diapers the preferred method of diapering, said Bengt Lager, Regal Lager president.
“Regal Lager is excited and honored to have Dave join the RDIA board and we hope to be able to contribute to the continued success of cloth diapers,” he continued.

One of the most important decisions parents must make for their newborn is deciding whether to use cloth or disposable diapers. The factors parents or caregivers should consider when selecting the best diaper are: health, cost and its impact on the environment. The first and most important factor in selecting the best diaper should concern your baby’s health, especially their skin. A common problem in diapering is diaper rash. Here are a couple of quick facts about how diaper rashes occur:
• It happens frequently for babies with sensitive skin (be mindful of new materials on baby’s skin and chemicals used to clean or produce diapers)
• Extended exposure to waste (urine and stool)
• Diaper lacks circulation (usually occurs in disposable diapers)
• Yeast infections (certain antibiotics can contribute to the imbalance of helpful and harmful bacteria)
• Improper sanitation of cloth diapers
Parents, please note that diaper rashes are very common, but in order to avoid it, be sure to keep baby’s skin clean and dry by changing diapers as needed.
About Disposable Diapers
Some parents prefer disposable diapers because you can simply dispose diapers into a diaper pail. Disposable diapers are useful when traveling. The positive features for disposable diapers are the highly absorbent materials used to contain wetness; the source is usually the absorbent gelling material (AGM) in the center of the diaper that contains moisture from the skin. Preventative measures for diaper rash in disposable diapers include changing the diapers frequently. Disposable diapers, however, have negative impacts on the environment. Disposable diapers do not break down quickly and therefore packs landfills with its waste. It is costly and associated with increasing time for potty training for children because they cannot feel wetness– due to absorbent material in disposable diapers. Additionally, the bleach used in disposable diapers contains potentially harmful chemicals to enhance their superabsorbent capabilities.
About Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers have evolved and become quite efficient in that they now have Velcro straps. The positive attributes for cloth diapers are no use of materials like AGM or dyes. These materials may affect a baby with sensitive skin. Cloth diapers can be cleaned in-house or by using a cleaning service, both options are proven more economical than disposable diapers. Although advocates of cloth diapers agree that disposable diapers negatively impact the environment, advocates of disposable diapers argue that the use of resources and energy – electricity and water negatively impacts the environment. Some diaper cleaning services use bleach to clean which can cause the same problems as bleached disposable diaper. Cloth diapers can also be messy, as you have to clean it yourself, or at the very least rid the waste material. As disposable diapers are ideal for traveling, cloth diapers are not because you must carry the soiled diapers with you. Diaper covers can be helpful but ultimately it may inconvenience the parent or caregiver.
